Me and the Mystic Lamb
Dec. 16th, 2013 12:23 pmMost of this week is going to be spent translating the history of the frames of Van Eyck's Mystic Lamb in St Bavo's Cathedral, probably Belgium's greatest masterpiece. It is part of a larger book on 15th and 16th century picture frames by Belgian art historian Hélène Verougstraete which I am translating for her for publication by the Getty Foundation.

It's a pleasant change from the usual corporate journalism and accounting reports.
So far in the book - in the bit on medieval carpentry - I have been able to add and correct bits and pieces from my own carpentry experience.
But the Mystic Lamb is something else: the reports made at the start of the restoration work a couple of years back are really professional, and I am not sure I can add anything. But you never know.
