I was out walking today in the north-east of Belgium. It is flat farmland and forest, with nature reserves containing the last remains of fenland (marsh). Very quiet and empty. Not breathtakingly beautiful, but a good place to meditate.

I walked into the local church and got talking with the local Catholic priest. An intelligent man in his early 40s. He said that what took him into the priesthood was his dislike of the way the faith was taught in school in the 1980s by priests who had taken on the revolutionary spirit of 1968.

 I have encountered this many times before. There is in Belgium a whole gaggle of poor-quality priests aged between 50 and 70, anti-authoritarian, cynical of hierarchy, celibacy and social order, with no ascetic discipline, who interpret the gospel through revolutionary-sociological spectacles. The largest remaining concentration of them is as religion teachers in school: vaguely supervised by the church, paid for by the state, almost impossible to remove.  Fortunately this génération maudite is reaching retirement age and often not continuing as serving priests.

I am surprised and curious to know more. This may be something you do not want to discuss in public, if so we can do so by other channels. I spent a week 2 years back in the Moscow seminary and have lectured in a StPB one. Some students I found a little too self confident (though that is a failing of many young men) and very insular, having a hard time accepting that God may work elsewhere than in their particular form of Orthodoxy. I am beginning to think that every Russian theology student should spend a semester outside Russia and every western student a semester in an Orthodox seminar.

Да, у Вас сложилось правильное впечатление о наших студентах... Часто такое представление о собственной исключительности сохраняется до первой поездки в какую-нибудь страну с прочными католическими традициями. К примеру, в Италию или Германию (в частности, Баварию). После таких поездок происходит очень серьёзное переосмысление отношения к инославию, а через это и к православию. Так что Ваша идея о необходимости провести хотя бы один учебный семестр в какой-нибудь из западных богословских школ мне кажется очень правильной. Сейчас у нас имеется такая возможность. В частности, нас приглашают в немецкие университеты и семинарии, но у нас есть одна серьёзная проблема: мы не умеем учить иностранные языки и потому их не знаем (есть, конечно, исключения, но это именно исключения). Так, в этом году немцы предоставляли нам стипендии для обучения в одном из университетов Германии и мы не смогли никого туда отправить, так как не нашлось ни одного студента, знающего разговорный немецкий язык... Вот и я учил всю жизнь английский, а так и не научился на нём говорить или писать.

Actually I was at the Sretinski.

I would certainly be happy to talk this subject further in person – relations with the non-Orthodox is one of my responsibilities in the ROC here, so I have a certain experience. Providing I can get a visa, I shall be in Russia from 15 to 30 October (St Petersburg – then hopefully 3 or 4 days in a monastery – then Moscow). Eventually we could meet then. I will incidentally be talking on the subject of attitudes to western Christianity at the Theological Academy in St PB and at the State University of St PB.

I know the language problem too well. It is not helped by the fact that England and the USA are not the obvious places to send Russian Orthodox theology students!
