Sermons in St Peter's
Feb. 21st, 2011 10:13 pmYesterday my wife (MmeKourdukova) and I visited in St Peter’s Church in the university city of Leuven. An attractive early 15th century building, expensively restored, but lacking stained glass (lost, along with the high altar in World War I). The pulpit is a huge, over-the-top late Baroque structure (for another posting).
In the choir part, which now serves as a museum, my eyes were drawn to the 'misericordes' in the 15th century choir stalls, which allowed the worthy clerics to be seen to stand, but actually transfer their weight onto the seat. As almost anywhere in Western Europe, they are carved.
Suddenly the faces started to speak to me about sermons (and they have surely had their fill over nearly 600 years...).If understood their Dutch dialect correctly, what they were saying was:
- What's Father going to come up with this week?
