A Roman Catholic priest friend of ours joined us for supper last night. He spoke of a frequent phenomenon he encounters in Belgium: of Catholics who maintain a deep spiritual life (prayer, bible…) but with relatively little interface with the organized church, with which they feel uncomfortable and unable to connect. Is this a specifically Roman Catholic phenomenon….?

Your answer with regard to Bible reading surprises me, given that people like John Chrestiankin fed his spiritual children with large chunks of Bible. I cannot conceive a serious Christian life without it. (My own is largely built on it.) Perhaps, OK, if you understood every word of the Sunday liturgy epistle and gospel and meditated it for the whole week, but I doubt whether one in 10 modern Russians can, both physically and intellectually, understand na slux the epistles as read in Slavonic in the Orthodoxy liturgy….

Да, так и есть, я полагаю.
Первая группа людей - читающие Библию, читающие отцов, бывающие в церкви каждое воскресенье, соблюдающие пост и читающие утреннее и вечернее правило.
Вторая группа людей - не ходящая в церковь и Библию не читающая.

За пределами церковной ограды духовная жизнь никому не интересна. Вот здесь хорошо, я думаю, написано:
"В Советском Союзе борьба с религией оказалась весьма успешной - привычку и потребность посещать по воскресениям церковь искоренили у абсолютного большинства населения. Поэтому человек, не желающий посещать церковь традиционную, спокойно, как и абсолютное большинство его сограждан, воскресным утром отсыпается; он не испытывает потребности пойти и создать собственную общину."
