Ordination - stop press

Here are my two favourite pictures of my ordination as deacon today. It was a happy occasion ... in the middle of a snowstorm. The bishop is Archbishop Simon of Brussels and Belgium. My particular thanks to my wife who coached my Russian and Slavonic into sufficient shape to use both today without too much damage, and to our two Protodeacon Alexanders for their guidance and patience.

Thank you. One thing at a time. Two things are important right now. One is learning to be an active, vocal part in liturgy. For the past five years, as a sub-deacon, it has been carrying candles at the various entries, dikerii and trikerri when the bishop has been here and making sure altar boys are in the right place at the right time. Now I go 'live'. The other is my 'outside' church job of relations with the other confessions, which is going to take a lot of time over the next 24 months (we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Orthodoxy in Belgium in 2012) for which the deacon rank is very helpful.

Дорогой Майкл, точнее, отец Майкл! Почему-то (я даже не могу по-настоящему понять, почему) это очень радостное событие. Но Вам теперь придётся всё время быть на виду, и молиться вслух от лица всех. Мне кажется, это нелегко. Надеюсь, это не повредит Вашей личной молитве, а углубит её.

Будут ли у Вас новые послушания по приходу? Владыка сказал, что ожидает от Вас ревностного приходского служения. Имеется в виду только богослужение, или ещё что-то?

Dear Pavel, How this will work in terms of personal prayer I don’t know yet. As subdeacon this was already not easy, making sure making sure that everything and everyone was in the right place at the right time. And all those illegible diptychs: nobody comes to the vigil service, so you end up with a huge pile between the Little Entrance and the Gospel…. Countless times over the last five years have I shaken my head and replaced a name by the phrase from the English Tomb of the Unknown Soldier: ‘Known only unto the Lord'.
My main послушания and why I am have been ordained is essentially because I am joint liaison officer with the other Christian confessions in Belgium. I am also working on setting up a theological conference for 2012 in Brussels, simply on Orthodoxy. For this the rank of deacon is helpful.
